English Grammar: THE GERUND AND FREE ADJUNCT

common uses

The gerund is the –ing form of the verb, but it is used in the same way as a noun either as the subject or object of the verb or on its own. It is most commontly used in the following ways:
a. to describe general activities or abstract idea
- My favorite forms of exercise are walking and swimming.
- I think trusting your children is very important.
b. when there is no single noun to describe that idea
- Going to the dentist’s still makes me really nervous.
c. When idea or activity are not put into a complete sentence
- In written list : Our priorities for next year are : - expanding into new market, - cutting costs
- Inconversation.
